Project Description

The purpose of this scheme was to save the city transport network from further deterioration by diverting the port bound commercial traffic through outer periphery roads of Karachi named as Southern Bypass and Northern Bypass roads.

Project Components:

The project essentially consisted of the following major components:

I. Southern By-Pass is connecting Karachi Port with National Highway and Korangi/Landhi Industrial area; consisting of the following sub components under KSDP:

  • Road over Railway Bridge at Quaidabad

  • Bridge over Malir River on Road 8000

  • Improvement of Korangi Road Link

II. Shaheed-e-Millat Road Extension upto Road 8000, consisting of the following sub components under KSDP:

  • Extension of Shaheed-e-Millat Road upto Right Bank Bund

  • Road along Right Bank Flood Protection Bund upto Road 8000

  • Detailed traffic studies were undertaken to ascertain the impact of traffic on the existing road network with and without improvement scenarios.  The traffic data were then used to assess the requirement, type and size of the proposed facilities
