Project Description

Karachi Port Trust leased out berths 22 to 24 to M/s. American President Line (APL) a USA based firm in joint venture with International Container Terminal Philippine, to develop a dedicated modern container terminal. The joint venture firms formed Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT). KICT appointed APL to arrange the design and construction of the terminal. M/s. JWD and William Casper, USA based, were appointed consultants by APL to plan the terminal. M/s. Engineering Consultants International was engaged to design the project in detail, carry out detailed Construction Supervision and Project Management. ECIL also provided support in the design / supervision of off loading system of heavy equipment such as rubber tyred gantry, rail mounted crane etc.

The facilities planned for the container terminal were very much similar to a Dry Port as follows:

  • Gate House and Security

  • Stacking Slots for a variety of cargo like bulk cargo, hazardous cargo, reefers, CFS etc.

  • Operation and Engineering buildings, administration building, inspection yard, custom building, etc.all similar to Dry Port

 

Services

The services included soil investigation, detailed topo survey, condition survey, tender documentation, and design and construction supervision as follows:

  • Supervision of sub-soil investigation

  • Detailed topographic survey

  • Conduct condition survey of existing buildings, pavement & docks

  • Preparation of tender documents for the renovation of existing buildings

  • Design & construction supervision of crane shop, labour building, gate houses, power houses and fueling facility

  • Design & construction supervision of electric power distribution system, yard lighting etc.

  • Construction supervision of crane beams, RTG tracks and pavement
